A system administrator is a person employed to maintain and also operate a computer system or the network of an organization. The system administrators are members of the information and technology department. The main responsibility of the system administrator is to ensure efficiency and stability of the operating systems, integrate the system optimally and proper security and performance of the firm?s operating system.
A system administrator performs many technical administration duties. His main duties are in the installation, operation, repairs and support of the company?s operating system and are also responsible for the server software, hardware and databases. Network and help desk support is also a part of the profile of the system administrator. The system administrator should have the ability to provide technical support and should possess knowledge of operating systems like UNIX, Solaris etc. He should also have knowledge of the web server technology like that of Internet Information services, SQL Server and many others.
He should also have the ability to maintain the operating system along with the knowledge of Local-Area Networks (LAN) and Wide-Area Networks (WAN). It is also important for him to have knowledge of database technology and that of software installation and network security like VPN. He should know how to implement the hardware infrastructure and should have the necessary knowledge of back-up processes and procedures. Apart from the technical skills the system administrator should have problem solving skills and the ability to prioritise. He should also have the ability to allocate tasks and should have a hands-on approach. He should be process oriented and should have the capability to meet deadlines. He should give complete attention to detail and should be results focused. He should be able to work under pressure and should possess effective listening skills.
A system administrator's responsibilities include analysing system logs and also to identify potential issues with the operating systems. He should introduce and integrate new technologies into existing data centres. He also has to perform routine audits of the systems and software. He has to take the backups of the data and has to apply operating system updates and undertake configuration changes. He also needs to install and configure new hardware and softwares in the organization. He needs to continuously add, remove and update user account information and should also reset passwords.
He has to answer technical queries and is also responsible for security of the systems. The system administrator is responsible for documenting the configuration of the system. He is also in charge of troubleshooting any reported problems and also for the system performance tuning.
