A Restaurant manager is a very important part of the successful running of any restaurant. Restaurant managers make sure that restaurants run efficiently and profitably while maintaining their reputation. Restaurant managers have to coordinate many activities, depending on the size or type of the outlet. Managers are also responsible for the performance of their restaurant and well as maintaining high standards of quality, service and also those of health and safety. Restaurant management has to combine strategic planning, shift pattern organization and day-to-day management activities.
Depending on the nature of the outlet, the role may also involve creative aspects especially for marketing and business development. As theirs is a key role within the hospitality sector, the restaurant management needs to be fast-paced. The typical work activities will vary depending on the type of restaurant but usually the main business activities include taking responsibility for the business performance of the restaurant. The manager is also responsible for analyzing and planning restaurant sales levels and profitability.
He needs to also organize marketing activities, such as promotional events and discount schemes to promote sales by attracting more people. He needs to prepare reports at the end of the shift or the week, including those for staff control, food control and sales. He is also responsible for creating and executing plans for department sales, profit and staff development and also for setting budgets planning and coordinating menus. Apart from the above the other major responsibilities of a restaurant manager includes those of coordinating the entire operation of the restaurant during his scheduled shifts.
He also needs to manage staff throughout their shift and providing them with proper feedback to increase efficiency. He also has the responsibility to respond to customer complaints to improve the services of the hotel or restaurant. He also needs to ensure that all employees adhere to the company?s rules and regulations. He needs to meet and greet customers and organize table reservations as per the requests. In times of need he needs to advise customers on menu and wine choice. Seeing the requirements he is also responsible for recruiting, training and motivating staff. His work profile also includes organizing and supervising the shifts of kitchen, waiters and cleaning staff.
The restaurant manager is also responsible for Housekeeping activities like maintaining high standards of quality control, hygiene, and health and safety. He needs to regularly check stock levels and order supplies as per the requirements. He also has to prepare cash drawers and providing petty cash as required and also help in any area of the restaurant when circumstances dictate. Thus, we see that the restaurant manager is responsible for all the operations of the restaurant and thus plays a very crucial role in its successful running
