Maintenance engineers arrange and plan the routine maintenance of the plant, machinery and equipment of the company. It is their responsibility to attend to all breakdowns, identify faults and inspect the repairs. In today?s times the manufacturing plants the machines are complex and thus the maintenance engineers use sophisticated, computerised systems to do their work.
The maintenance engineer might supervise the work of teams of other maintenance employees like the fitters and technicians. Maintenance engineers are required in all steps of the manufacturing process. In equipment development, they work to incorporate efficient methods of maintaining new equipment or plant, and may be involved in the installation and commissioning process.
Through the production phase, they work to improve the useful life of plant, equipment and machinery. Maintenance engineering plays an important role in the development and growth of the manufacturing industries. Maintenance engineers? work with other departments, like the manufacturing systems engineers, production managers and work towards improving production facilities, reduce the breakdowns, and also develop strategies to improve overall consistency and safety of the manufacturing plant, the workers in the plant and also of the overall production processes.
High-risk industries like petro-chemical, nuclear and aviation, have well-developed dependability strategies. In other manufacturing industries it is the responsibility of the maintenance engineers to promote the development of overall reliability, apart from the work of responding to breakdowns. In the Information and Technology industry the maintenance engineers are responsible for the hardware like PCs, routers, servers, etc. He is responsible for its procurement and their installation and maintenance. He also deals with software issues for the company like resolving the network problems in local and wide area networks, configuring the systems, installation of upgrades on a designed schedule, and also provides advice and support to all the computer users.
Maintenance engineers may also be responsible to build up the plant asset care policies. This means he needs to liaise directly with suppliers, customers, other departments and the managers. In some companies the scope of work extends to practical, engineering, problem-solving, and supervising technical staff. The main responsibility of the maintenance engineer involves designing the maintenance strategies of the pant and devise suitable measures and methods for doing the same.
