Calicut is a city in the southern part of the country in the state of Kerala. The city is also called Kozhikode. It is the third largest city in Kerala. One of the main economic activities in this part of the state is agriculture. As per the reports available out of the total workforce of the state nearly 14% are employed in agriculture. Agriculture contributes majorly to the revenue of the stat too. More than half of the district’s income comes from agriculture and other allied activities. The most widely grown crop here is coconut. One of the most important plantation crops grown here is rubber. It is grown in the parts where climate and soil is favorable to its growth.
There is a Rubber Board too which promotes the growth of the plant and introduces schemes to help the farmers. The most important spice crop that is cultivated in Calicut is pepper. These along with other crops contribute majorly to the revenue. This sector also is important to the economy of the state as it employs a large part of the population and helps them earn their living. Besides the people who grow these crops, many are employed on the allied sectors and also jobs are created for those who facilitate the sale of the agricultural produce. The district of Calicut has a coastline of 71 kilometers and has a huge pool of resources for the development of fisheries. There is immense scope for shrimp farming. Fishing is the main occupation of a large part of the population living on the coastline.
This industry makes a huge contribution to the economy of the state and gives employment to a large number of people. The city has the famous Indian Institute of Management and other schools and colleges. All these educational institutes offer job opportunities to the educated and qualified people and also many local people get employment here as support staff to facilitate the smooth running of the institutes. The city has many places of tourist interest like the Kozhikode beach, Mananchira and other beaches. Apart from these there is an art gallery, the Krishna Menon Museum and a planetarium. All these places of interest attract many tourists. With the development of tourism there are many hotels and restaurants coming up here to cater to the needs of the tourists.
This sector is developing and also creates many job opportunities for the people of the city. Calicut or Kozhikode is an important city in the state of Kerala and with agriculture and fishing as the main economic activities there are many job opportunities available for the local people of the city.
