Aizwal is the capital of the Mizoram, a state in the north eastern area of India.
It has a population of 228,220 but is not very developed in terms of trade and commerce.
The main occupation of the people of Aizwal is agriculture. About 70% of the population
is engaged in agriculture. The main items that are grown in the area are beans,
rice, corn, tobacco, cotton, oilseeds, pumpkins and peanuts. Major scope exists
for the population to venture into agriculture raised activities.
Most of the crops grown in the state are cash crops. Proper channelization of resources
and careful marketing of these products can turn out to be a very viable venture
in the state. Another job opportunity that can be explored by the people is that
of food processing units. As the state has a major population which earns it?s living
from agriculture and the growth of fruits and vegetables is bound to grow so venturing
into food processing units will result in being profitable. The Geological survey
of India has reported that there are many minerals available in the region of Aizwal.
The only mineral that is explored right now is hard rock which is used in road formation.
Thus, as the survey confirms there are many unexplored minerals in the area which
gives incentive to the mining companies and also for people to start mining, which
will create many job opportunities and will be important to take the state a long
way on the path of development. The local population of the city produces bamboo
handicrafts and also makes handloom cloth. These products are of high quality and
there lies a major potential in export of these to the other parts of the country
and the world. By providing proper design and marketing, credit facility and the
inputs the vast potential can be tapped.
Aizwal at the moment does not hold a very important position in the tourist map
of the country. It has scenic beauty and a pleasant weather which shows the potential
that exists to develop tourism in the city. The government should try and develop
hydro power generation in the state as there is immense scope due to the resources
available. The development of power projects in the state can give job opportunities
to the population in various sectors of the project.
The city of Aizwal has public sector banks and some of the private sector too. These
banks give job opportunities to the population is various departments like accounts,
marketing and administration. Thus, we see that Aizwal though at present does not
have many job opportunities apart from agriculture but if proper planning and investments
are available there is immense potential to develop the state and also the job market.
